The diplomat wears Prada: Wintour on ambassador shortlist?

As part of a second-term shakeup of his diplomatic corps, President Obama is reportedly considering the appointment of Vogue editor-in-chief and major campaign donor Anna Wintour as U.S. ambassador to Great Britain or France.

Sources cited by Bloomberg News' Hans Nichols said Wintour, 63, is among a handful of top Obama financiers interested in the posts, which have become choice presidential rewards for elite political supporters.

Obama is also said to be eyeing campaign finance chairman Matthew Barzun and investment banker Marc Lasry for diplomatic appointments, according to Bloomberg.

All three figures - Wintour, Barzun and Lasry - are Obama bundlers, each raising more than $500,000 for his 2012 re-election bid, according to estimates provided by the Obama campaign.

Vogue spokeswoman Megan Salt would not confirm whether Wintour has been approached about a diplomatic job, or whether she'd consider it, telling ABC News that Wintour is "very happy with her current job."

Neither Lasry nor Barzun, 42, the former U.S. ambassador to Sweden, could be reached for comment. A White House official did not immediately respond to an ABC News request for comment.

Rumors of an official post for Wintour have swirled for months, following her high-profile role in hosting star-studded Obama fundraising events and pushing a grassroots campaign fundraising contest.

Wintour, actress Gwyneth Paltrow and designer Tom Ford hosted a $15,000-per-plate fundraiser for Obama in London Sept. 19, according to an invitation obtained by the Sunlight Foundation.

She also co-hosted a $40,000-per-plate fundraising dinner at the New York City home of actress Sarah Jessica Parker in June and a $35,800-a-head event at the Connecticut home of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein in August. Obama attended both events.

During the 2008 campaign, Obama spoke out against the influence of special interests inside the executive branch, criticizing those who had "turned our government into a game only they can afford to play."

Still, as iWatch News reported last year, many of Obama's 2008 campaign bundlers received prestigious appointments and exclusive access.

Telecom executive and Obama financier Donald Gips became the ambassador to South Africa. The current U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom, Louis Susman, was a fundraising machine for Obama's 2008 run.

And in April, Obama nominated Timothy Broas, who also raised more than $500,000 for Obama four years ago, to be the next ambassador to the Netherlands.

November Auto Sales - Business Insider

UPDATE: Ford Motor just released monthly auto sales figures for November, rising 6.4 percent from a year earlier versus expectations of a 2.4 percent gain as the industry continues to recover from the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

Nissan also posted a monster month, with sales up 12.9 percent versus estimates of a 4.8 percent rise.

Below is an excerpt from the Ford release:

November brought growth throughout Ford's product portfolio in the U.S., with car sales up 15 percent, utilities up 2 percent and trucks up 4 percent.??

"November represented a strong month for the industry, and Ford sales performed well across the board," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. "We saw sharp increases in demand for Ford's fuel-efficient small cars, our best-ever month for electrified vehicles and growing demand for our fuel-efficient and capable F-Series pickups."

Ford had its best small car November sales month since 2000, with Focus, the all-new C-MAX Hybrids and Fiesta sales totaling 26,848 vehicles ? a 76 percent increase over last year. Focus sales were up 56 percent versus year-ago levels, while the all-new C-MAX Hybrid lineup gained 52 percent versus October, when the C-MAX Energi went on sale.

The Ford F-Series, America's best-selling vehicle, posted an 18 percent increase, with 56,299 vehicles sold in November. This represents F-Series' best November since 2005 and 16 straight months of year-over-year sales increases.??

Ford's total November sales of 177,673 vehicles increased 6 percent versus last year, with retail sales up 12 percent.

Ford also announced its 2013 first-quarter North American production plan. The company plans to build 750,000 vehicles in the first quarter, up 11 percent (73,000 vehicles) from 2012's first quarter. Fourth quarter production of 725,000 vehicles is unchanged from previous guidance.

ORIGINAL:?All of the major auto manufacturers, including GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, and Honda, report monthly sales figures today.

Chrysler kicked things off this morning, announcing a 14 percent rise in November sales from the previous year. However, analysts were expecting a 16 percent gain.

Nonetheless, it was Chrysler's best November in five years. One executive shrugged off the fiscal cliff in the press release and hinted that Hurricane Sandy still is weighing on sales:

?Even with all the talk of a looming fiscal cliff, Chrysler Group is well positioned for a strong sales finish to the year,? said Reid Bigland, President and CEO ? Dodge Brand and Head of U.S. Sales. ?Our November sales were up 14 percent and we extended our sales streak to 32-consecutive months of year-over-year sales gains. We are expecting a strong December as the industry continues to recover from the East Coast hurricane and consumers continue to respond to our popular year-end Big Finish event.?

Analysts project that November was a blockbuster month for total vehicle sales. The consensus estimate is a rise to 15.00M units sold at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR), up from 14.22M in October.

We will add sales figures and releases from GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan as they report throughout the day. Click here for live updates >

Have a bloody, Hobbity Hollywood holiday

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Thanks for the early gifts, Hollywood! November was a magical movie month ("Skyfall," "Lincoln") and December is shaping up much the same way -- some great cinema offerings are out there, if you can take a break from shopping and cookie-baking or family-visiting. Here's a look at our top picks.

Paramount/New Line/ Weinstein

"Jack Reacher," "Monsters Inc." in 3-D, "Django Unchained" and "The Hobbit" are all hitting theaters in December.

DEC. 14:
'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'
Those furry-footed guys are back again. Bless you, J.R.R. Tolkien, for being so prolific that we can not only get three movies out of the "Lord of the Rings," but three more out of the much shorter "Hobbit." (Will "The Silmarillion" be next?) ?"Unexpected Journey" begins the saga as Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf head off to the Lonely Mountain on a quest of their own. Plenty of familiar faces from "LOTR" are back for the ride.

DEC. 19

'Monsters Inc.' in 3-D
It's been more than a decade since Pixar monsters Mike and Sulley trotted onto the scene in 2001's "Monsters Inc." Now that treasured animated film is getting the 3-D treatment, and even kids who weren't born when the movie came out can now see the "Monsters" on the big screen. If they like what they see, start counting down to June 21, when the prequel, "Monsters University," will come out.

'This Is 40'

They could have called it "Knocked Up 2: Electric Boogaloo." The "Knocked Up" sequel, "This Is 40," reunites us with Paul Rudd (Pete) and Leslie Mann (Debbie) ?as they fight their way through their 40s. If you like director/writer Judd Apatow's sense of humor and his family (Mann is his wife in real life, and their daughters play Mann and Rudd's daughters onscreen), you'll be knocking on this one's door. ("Bridesmaids" fans, Melissa McCarthy steals her scene in the trailer.)

'Zero Dark Thirty'

We'll never know exactly what went down on May 2, 2011, when Navy SEALs burst into Osama bin Laden's Abbottabad, Pakistan, compound and killed the world's most wanted terrorist. But "Zero Dark Thirty" may give us as good a shot as any. Director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal won Oscars for "The Hurt Locker," so if you appreciated that well-crafted war film, you know to expect a classy production here.

DEC. 21
'Jack Reacher'
Whatever you think of his personal life and various tabloid headlines, Tom Cruise has developed from a young "Risky Business" and "Top Gun" heartthrob into a credible action hero. ("Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" proved that.) He's now taking on the book-favorite character of Jack Reacher, author Lee Child's stoic, drifter hero. (One weird note: Reacher is noted in the books as being 6'5" while Cruise is ... not.) If the film's a hit, Child has more than a dozen more Reacher books that could be mined.?

?

DEC. 25
'Django Unchained'
Oh, a Quentin Tarantino movie. It will surely open quietly in a few arthouse theaters and no one will see -- ha, just kidding. The iconic director has lined up big stars (Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz), an intriguing story line, and his trademark over-the-top blood-splattering and smart dialogue. In "Django Unchained," Foxx plays a freed slave who hooks up with a white bounty hunter (the wonderfully creepy Waltz) in hopes of reuniting with his wife, who's been sold. It opens on Christmas Day. Happy holidays, Merry Christmas, peace on earth, now pass a bit of the old ultra-violence.

'Les Miserables'?
Hollywood's pulling out all the stops for this one. Legendary novel. Powerhouse Broadway musical. Star-studded cast. Christmas Day release. If you've dreamed a dream while seeing "Les Mis" in a theater, or even if you've just been sucked in by a wasting-away Anne Hathaway in the trailer, or even if you enjoyed George Costanza singing "Master of the House" on "Seinfeld," this is your big present. Russell Crowe even joins Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried and the rest in song.

?

Which film?is at the top of your list this month? Tell us on Facebook.?

See Mercury at Dawn and Jupiter All Night Long

This is a great week for planetary observers. Mercury is in its best position as a "morning star" for observers in the Northern Hemisphere while Jupiter is at its biggest and brightest for nighttime observers all over the world.

First let's take a look at Mercury's dawn sky performance. Because Mercury never strays far from the sun, it is usually a challenging object to observe.

Only rarely does Mercury reach maximum elongation when the ecliptic is at a steep angle to the horizon, so that it can be spotted against a fairly dark sky. Each year this happens once in the evening and once in the morning, and this is the week to look for Mercury in the morning sky for northern observers. As a bonus, the brighter planets Saturn and Venus point the way to find Mercury's tiny disk against the glow of dawn.

Even when well placed, Mercury can be a challenge unless you have a clear sky on your eastern horizon. Sweeping with binoculars will often help to first locate Mercury. Once located in binoculars, it is usually quite easy to see with the unaided eye. A telescope will show it as a tiny "half-moon." [Amazing Night Sky Photos by Stargazers]

Jupiter in the night sky

Jupiter, on the other hand, dominates the sky all night. It reaches opposition, a point exactly opposite the sun in our sky, on Dec. 2, and moves from the morning sky to the night sky.

On the nights around opposition, it is in the sky all night long, rising in the east as the sun sets in the west, and setting in the west as the sun rises in the east. When opposition happens this close to the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere, Jupiter is above the horizon for a full 15 hours.

If you have a telescope good enough to show you the details of Jupiter?s cloud belts, you can watch a full rotation of the planet, which takes a little under 10 hours. You should be able to see the Great Red Spot at some point during any night, and might even see it twice in one night.

Jupiter?s Great Red Spot is the longest-lived atmospheric feature in the entire solar system. Its position has been tracked by astronomers since 1894, and there are observations of it going back more than a century earlier than that. At times the Great Red Spot has been a large brick-red object, three times lager than the entire planet Earth. Currently it is a pale remnant of its former self, so that observing it can be a challenge.

Jupiter's big (red) spot explained

What do you need to spot Jupiter's Great Red Spot?

First of all, a good quality telescope with at least 6 inches (150 mm) aperture. Secondly, a night with very stable atmospheric conditions on Earth. Finally, your timing needs to be right, because the planet Jupiter rotates faster than any other planet.

Half the time, the Red Spot is on the side of the planet you can?t see. Even when it?s on the side facing Earth, it?s often lost in the haze on Jupiter?s limb. It is really only at its best within an hour on either side of its time of central meridian transit.

As already mentioned, the Red Spot?s position has been tracked for over a century. The problem is that it is not an object fixed to the planet itself, but is a huge storm system, mostly confined to a constant latitude, but drifting over time in longitude.

If you have a computer program which shows the position of Jupiter?s Red Spot, it is probably wrong. That?s because, unlike most things depicted in planetarium software, the Red Spot does not move in a uniform predictable manner. You have to tell your software the current position of the Great Red Spot.

Consult the manual for your software to find out how to set the longitude of the Red Spot. Its current longitude, as of late November, is 188? in Jupiter?s System 2 longitude system. To get the Red Spot?s most up-to-date position, visit: http://jupos.privat.t-online.de/rGrs.htm

The red dots mark the actual raw measured positions of the Great Red Spot in longitude (across the chart) against the date (down the chart).

There is also this simple calculator via Sky & Telescope magazine, which will give you the approximate times the Red Spot transits Jupiter?s central meridian for any date.

Choose a time within an hour of one of these transit times.

Jupiter's Great Pink Spot?

The last thing you need to know when looking for the Red Spot is that it is no longer red. Its current color is best described as a very pale salmon pink. Most of the time the Red Spot is not visible by where it is, but rather where it isn?t. Because it is lighter in tone than the South Equatorial Belt in which it resides, it is most often seen as a hollow in the south side of that belt, sometimes called the Red Spot Hollow.

Be forewarned that most photos of Jupiter have been processed to exaggerate the contrast and colors of Jupiter?s atmospheric features. The real planet has much fainter markings than you see in pictures.

Also be prepared to use averted vision to detect the faint markings: Look slightly off to one side of the planet. Finally, be patient. Planetary features only pop into view now and then when we get a steadier moment in our atmosphere.

Taking it Home for November 25 Youth Class: Thinking of Death ...

?

The question is not whether we will die but how we have lived.

? Joan Borysenko, psychologist

Talk about the quote. What does it mean to you?

WHAT WE DID TODAY

Today?s Big Question was ?What happens when you die?? We talked about some different answers to the question which come from a variety of belief systems. We heard what a Unitarian Universalist minister said when he had cancer and expected to die soon. We found out that UUs talk more about heaven- and hell-like situations on Earth and what to do about them, than we talk about an afterlife. That is because many UUs believe we live on after life through what we did when we were alive?as well as in the memories of our families and friends. We also explored rituals to memorialize people after they die.

ANSWERING TODAY?S BIG QUESTION

What do family members have to say about the question: ?What happens when we die??

What does your family do so relatives who have died live on, through you?

VISIT THE DEAD

Go to a cemetery and look at the gravestones. What can you learn from them? Do those messages help the people buried there live on? Are there flowers and mementos? Why do people put them there?

SHARED SEARCH

Go through a family photo album or ?family tree.? Choose somebody you know little about who has died. Find out as much as you can about that person so they can live on through you.

REFLECT ON YOUR BELIEFS

Ask another big question: Is anything worth dying for? Patrick Henry was a famous patriot who said, ?Give me Liberty or Give me Death.? Was he right? What do you think is worth dying for?

PHOTO CHALLENGE

Photograph a cycle of life and death. You might start with a seed, photograph a flower as it grows through the summer, and photograph it again when it dies in a frost. You might photograph spring buds and then beautiful dying leaves.

FIND OUT MORE

Bereaved Children: A Support Guide for Parents and Professionals by Earl A.Grollman (Beacon, 1996) offers insight into how children and adolescents experience death and grieving and how adults can help them through such experiences. The book presents ways children and adults might bring various faith perspectives to the subject of death.
