HBT: MLB creates task force to attract black players

Even if we are taking the annual Lapchick study with a grain of salt due to its failure to use common denominators, Major League Baseball takes the underlying issue of the decline of U.S.-born blacks in baseball seriously enough that it?s doing something about it:

Major League Baseball has created a task force to study why the number of African-Americans playing the sport has declined in recent years, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.

The 17-member committee, which will be chaired by Tigers president/GM Dave Dombrowski, will hold its first meeting in Milwaukee on Wednesday. He?ll be joined by several other baseball executives, plus Stanford athletic director Bernard Muir; Frank Marcos, senior director of baseball?s scouting bureau; and former White Sox and Mets manager Jerry Manuel.

I wish baseball hadn?t made a mockery of task forces and studies with that whole Oakland thing, because I would like to think that this would lead to some actual useful and actionable information.?Here?s hoping it does, because it would tickle me pink if baseball could figure out how to get more kids to put down the footballs and basketballs and pick up a bat and a glove.

The answer, at least in part, is probably money and engagement by people and organizations with money. Because we have to face facts that baseball is not a cheap sport to play on the amateur level, what with its single-use fields, travel and equipment requirements. ?I know there are urban initiatives afoot by the league, but in addition to that I?d like to see something less charitable/community-involvement-oriented and something of something that is more ruthlessly talent-development-orients. A system in which teams try to identify and support young baseball talent in the U.S. with an idea toward making them major league ballplayers. The draft disincentivizes this, sadly, but perhaps there?s a workaround or league-wide solution.

Working and Facebooking: No Longer Impossible

Early in my career I had to be quick on the draw when it came to social media. Having Facebook open was a waste of time. MySpace (which was still popular at the time) was a HUGE no-no. I don?t know why one was worse than the other, but it was for some reason.? Anyway I was a subordinate to everyone, as careers tend to start, so the last thing I wanted was to do was send the message that I indulged in silly little time-wasters designed to stalk high school boyfriends. So when my supervisors walked by, I had to shrink that screen FAST.

Fast-forward 7 years, and now if Facebook is NOT open on my desktop I?m not doing my job.

Let?s take a minute and appreciate how cool it is that social media is a one-stop shop for entertainment, time-wasting, and incredibly powerful and ever-emerging marketing and customer communication. And that it?s an integral part of my (and probably also your) job.

But there is still a huge stigma about having Facebook open at work. The truth is, even though practically every workstation in America has a desk on it with Internet connectivity, ?being online? still feels taboo.? But why? We all acknowledge that we need and use the Internet for business interests, especially in the association space.

I find inspiration and content on practically every website I visit. My daily smile that I post on MemberClicks? social media every morning almost always comes from Reddit, widely recognized as the biggest time-waster website out there. Pretty much every jpg that inspired my SocialFish contributor posts came from Pinterest. Now Pinterest is part of my daily workflow as MemberClicks has a presence there, but it?s still fairly new in the social marketing world and has yet to prove itself as a must-have for internet marketing campaigns. (Side note: This isn?t to say that Pinterest hasn?t been a very valuable resource for us, but for an executive with limited time and resources it might not yet be the best investment of time from a marketing standpoint.) So in theory, you could be searching for paint swatches or a crock-pot recipe and be struck with your next brilliant blog idea. Like I frequently do, apparently.

For example, here?s the pin that led to this blog:

Naturally, there?s the NSFW concern. There is a wide (and we mean WIDE) variety of content available online that?s? shall we say? inappropriate. Try as you might to keep your computer screen PG-13, it?s almost impossible to avoid it, even with filters.

And then there?s also the fact that social media might have absolutely nothing to do with your job. Your company might even have it blocked, along with YouTube, Twitter, and other social networking platforms.

So here?s what you say to your boss when you make the case for that content to be unblocked, or when you have to think fast to justify why you were on Facebook between 9am and 5pm on a Wednesday. Now keep in mind these are LEGITIMATE reasons to use social media for business. If you were price comparing Italian leather boots between Amazon and Zappos you are on your own.

1)?? You were monitoring the activity on your company/association?s page

Every department in every company from the CEO to the janitor needs to look in on their employer?s social media from time to time. Remember that social media is the public?s chance to speak directly to anyone and everyone about what?s going on in their life, and that includes any interactions they may have with you.

2)?? You were checking out the competition or partners

Intellectual property should be guarded, but the Internet, social media in particular, is a playground where ideas are shared. Who set the bar for your industry?s social media presence? You need to keep an eye on that.

3)?? You were looking for relevant content to share or read

If it you want it to be successful, content must be shared on social media. That?s a huge part of where the term ?going viral? comes from, except instead of literal word of mouth things are passed through Facebook mentions and Twitter links. I can almost guarantee that if you?re looking for something to read about your business, area of expertise, or your association?s interest you will something on social media.

So now do you feel better about having Facebook open when your boss walks by? Or bosses of the world, do you feel better about your employees spending their work time on Facebook? If not, that?s ok. Change doesn?t happen overnight. But I bet you? it will happen.

Polluting plastic particles invade the Great Lakes

Apr. 8, 2013 ? Floating plastic debris -- which helps populate the infamous "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" in the Pacific Ocean -- has become a problem in the Great Lakes, the largest body of fresh water in the world. Scientists reported on the latest findings from the Great Lakes in New Orleans on April 9 at the 245th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS.

"The massive production of plastic and inadequate disposal has made plastic debris an important and constant pollutant on beaches and in oceans around the world, and the Great Lakes are not an exception," said Lorena M. Rios Mendoza, Ph.D., who spoke on the topic at the meeting.

Fish and birds could be harmed from accidently eating the plastic particles, or absorbing substances that leach out into the water, Rios said. Her team knows from analyses of fish stomachs that fish are consuming the plastic particles. Fish also could pass such substances to consumers, but Rios said research on that topic is just beginning.

Much of the plastic pollution in the oceans and Great Lakes goes unnoticed by the casual observer because it is so small. In the samples Rios' team collected in Lake Erie, 85 percent of the particles were smaller than two-tenths of an inch, and much of that was microscopic. Her group found between 1,500 and 1.7 million of these particles per square mile.

Fish, however, often mistake these bits of plastic for food. "The main problem with these plastic sizes is its accessibility to freshwater organisms that can be easily confused as natural food and the total surface area for adsorption of toxins and pseudo-estrogens increases significantly," Rios said. It is not yet understood whether these toxins enter the food chain in harmful amounts.

Rios also pointed out that the problem of ocean plastics is quickly growing. Plastic production has increased 500 percent since 1980, and plastics now account for 80 to 90 percent of ocean pollution, according to Rios. Some of this comes from plastic bags, bottles and other trash, or from fishing lines. Another source is household products like abrasive facial cleaners or synthetic fibers shed by clothes in the washing machine. The researchers also found large numbers of plastic pellets, which are shipped around the world to be melted down and molded into everything from plastic milk jugs to parts for cars.

The plastic pollution problem may be even worse in the Great Lakes than in the oceans, Rios said. Her team found that the number of microparticles -- which are more harmful to marine life because of their small size -- was 24 percent higher in the Great Lakes than in samples they collected in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. With a volume equal to 1.65 million Olympic swimming pools, the Great Lakes are the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world, and this is the first time that scientists have looked there for plastics.

The problem of plastic pollution in the oceans, however, has been widely known since at least 1988, when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration first described the so-called "Great Pacific Garbage Patch," an area in the North Pacific Ocean where currents have concentrated plastics and other pollution. The patch varies in dimensions, but estimates indicate that at times it has been twice the size of the state of Texas.

Health and Fitness Talk ? Sickle Cell Disease

by Kimberly Allen, RN

Sickle cell disease (also called sickle cell anemia) is a blood disorder that is inherited.? It is a condition that affects mostly people of African descent, however, it also develops in other ethnic groups. ?There are over 70,000 Americans with sickle cell disease and approximately 2 million Americans that have the sickle cell trait.? Sickle cell disease is an autosomal recessive disorder which means it requires 2 abnormal genes, one from each parent.? Those that inherit 1 gene are carriers which is called having the sickle cell trait.
In sickle cell disease, there are not sufficient healthy red blood cells available to carry oxygen throughout the body.? Normal red blood cells are round and flexible allowing them to move easily through the blood vessels.? In a person that has sickle cell disease the red blood cells are sticky and rigid.? They are shaped like crescent moons or sickles thus the name sickle cell.? Because the red blood cells are sticky, rigid and irregularly shaped they tend to get stuck in the smaller blood vessels which slows and can even block the blood flow which in turn slows or blocks the oxygen from reaching parts of the body.? This can cause? significant pain as well as cause damage to muscles, organs and bones in your body.
sickle cellUsually the symptoms of sickle cell disease manifest after an infant has reached 4 months of age.? The major symptom is anemia.? Normal red blood cells have a life span of 120 days, then they die? and are replaced by new red blood cells.? In a person with sickle cell disease, the red blood cells affected only have a life span of 10-20 days.? Because they die off so quickly there are not enough new red blood cells to replace them which leaves them with a chronic shortage of red blood cells to deliver oxygen throughout their body, which in turn leads to chronic fatigue as well as? other symptoms of anemia.? People with sickle cell disease also experience episodes of severe pain.? These are known as sickle cell crises and occur because the sickle cells have? gotten stuck and blocked the blood flow throughout the small blood vessels located throughout areas of the body including the chest and abdomen as well as the joints.? Some people even need to be hospitalized in order to manage the crisis.? One of the first symptoms a parent may notice in an infant is swollen hands and feet caused by the sickle cell red blood cells obstructing the blood flow in and out of their hands and feet.? People with sickle cell disease are also more prone to infection because the spleen which helps to fight infection tends to become damaged by the sickle cells.? Children with sickle cell also tend to experience slowed growth and delayed puberty in teenagers.? Another problem that some people with sickle cell disease have is with the tiny blood vessels in their eyes.? If those blood vessels become blocked by the sickle cells the retina can be damaged causing vision problems.
Currently the only potential cure for sickle cell disease is a bone marrow transplant.? However, this is a very serious procedure that carries serious risks including potential death.? Because of this treatment for sickle cell disease usually focuses on avoiding crises, relieving symptoms and preventing complications.? People with sickle cell disease need to see their doctor regularly to have their blood checked and their overall health monitored.? Some doctors will recommend that children with sickle cell disease start taking penicillin when they?re 2 months old until they are at least 5 years old to help prevent serious infections like pneumonia.? For adults with sickle cell disease the doctor may recommend a medication called hydroxyurea which can help decrease the need for blood transfusions and reduce the frequency of crises.? Because hydroxyurea increase your chances of developing an infection it is only recommended for adults.? There have also been some concerns raised that long-term use on this medication may cause leukemia or tumors in some people.? Your doctor will be able to help you decide if this medication will benefit you.

Reduced Guilt? Chocolate Gets A Healthy, Fruity Makeover

You could cut up to half the fat from chocolate without sacrificing taste by infusing it with fruit juice, scientists say.

Chocoholics, rejoice!

British scientists have developed a new fruit-juice-infused chocolate that they say has up to 50 percent less fat than the regular stuff. And it's tasty, too.

The scientists, led by University of Warwick's Stefan Bon, created the hybrid chocolate using a blender to generate microscopic droplets of fruit juice fine enough to blend into molten chocolate.

Bon and his team presented their research on Sunday at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society in New Orleans.

According to Bon, these "micro-bubbles" of juice preserve that oh-so-satisfying velvety texture of chocolate, while also replacing much of the fat content. "This approach maintains the things that make chocolate 'chocolatey,' but with fruit juice instead of fat," he explains.

Sneaking fruit juice into chocolate may not change the "mouth feel" of the much-beloved treat, but Bon admits that it does subtly affect the taste.

"Obviously, the blend of fruit juice and chocolate gives it a twist," he writes in an email to The Salt. However, since the juice is spread out in the chocolate, Bon says that the taste isn't overwhelming and instead gives the chocolate "a hint of juice flavor."

So far, Bon's team has made chocolate infused with apple, orange and cranberry juice. And if you don't like fruit in your chocolate, don't worry. The scientists say that it's also possible to use other fluids to lower chocolate's fat content ? diet soda, vitamin C water, even alcohol (though that raises a whole new set of issues.)

For the boozy chocolate, the scientists had to develop a completely different infusion method. Instead of using a blender, they thickened up the chocolate using particles of agar gel, often used as a stabilizing agent in food.

"Using this alternative technique, we can not only introduce fruit juice and water, but also alcoholic beverages," writes Bon.

Although chocolate contains antioxidants, the potential health benefits of indulging in this treat can be negated by its high fat content if you overindulge. According to Bon, a two-ounce serving of dark chocolate can contain around 20 percent of your total daily recommended fat intake.

"We have established the chemistry that's a starting point for healthier chocolate," says Bon.

But don't run out to the candy store quite yet. Bon says that it's now up to the food industry to "take the next steps and use the technology to make tasty, lower-fat chocolate bars."

And while some chocolate purists may disagree, I, for one, see no problem sinking my teeth into a delicious bar of reduced-guilt chocolatey goodness.

Better living through chemistry climate science? | Watts Up With That?

The American Chemical Society decides to put themselves into the climate communications business.

From their press release:

Understanding climate science: A scientist?s responsibility to communicate with the public

NEW ORLEANS, April 8, 2013 ? With global climate change and the prospect of another record-hot summer on the minds of millions of people, experts have gathered here today to encourage scientists to take a more active role in communicating the topic to the public, policy makers and others. The symposium, ?Understanding Climate Science: A Scientist?s Responsibility,? is part of the 245th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world?s largest scientific society.

Speakers are highlighting a new resource that scientists can use in communicating the science of climate change. Launched late last year, the ACS Climate Science Toolkit, available at http://www.acs.org/climatescience, is a web-based tool to enhance understanding and communication of the science underpinning global climate change. The toolkit was developed for ACS? more than 163,000 members and others. Abstracts related to the symposium are at the end of this release.

The project, more than a year in development, was one of the major initiatives that Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, Ph.D., 2012 ACS president, put forth for his year in office. Shakhashiri, the William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, described the toolkit as a unique resource, with a sharp focus on the scientific concepts that determine Earth?s climate.

?The ACS Climate Science Toolkit fills a need for education and equips scientists with the information and other resources necessary to develop a robust intellectual structure to communicate on this key topic,? said Shakhashiri. ?Climate change affects everyone and everything on Earth, and ranks as one of the greatest global challenges of the early 21st century.?

Shakhashiri explained that the ACS is among the major scientific organizations with position statements acknowledging the reality of climate change and recommending action. The ACS policy statement mentions that people need a basic understanding of climate science in order to make informed personal decisions. And it describes climate change education for the public as ?essential.? Not explicit in the statement, however, is the responsibility of individual ACS members to take active roles in this education process as both scientists and citizens.

?Scientist-citizens must use their expertise and credibility as scientists ? as the ACS Mission Statement expresses so eloquently ? ??for the benefit of Earth and its people,?? Shakhashiri added. ?Recruiting individual scientists to take on this responsibility requires encouragement and exhortation. It also requires providing convenient access to reliable tools for doing so.?

The ACS Climate Science Toolkit discusses greenhouse gases, how the Earth?s heating mechanism works, how the vibrational energy from molecules changes into translational kinetic energy and much more. The toolkit also provides a package of ?Climate Science Narratives? that can be adapted and personalized when scientists have the opportunity to speak about climate science to other audiences. Those may include students, schoolteachers, college and university faculty, industrial scientists and business leaders, civic and religious groups, professional science and educational organizations, and elected public officials at all levels and in all branches of government.

Work on the toolkit began in 2011, when Shakhashiri formed the ACS Presidential Working Group on Climate Science, a panel of distinguished scientists and science communicators chaired by physical chemist and science educator Jerry A. Bell, Ph.D. The panel worked on two tasks. One was to develop a toolkit that ACS members and others could use for self-education on climate science, to understand the fundamental chemical and physical processes that determine Earth?s climate. The second was an ongoing task of developing strategies for using the toolkit in communicating about climate change to other audiences.

The Dec. 3, 2012, edition of Chemical & Engineering News, ACS? weekly newsmagazine, contains a Comment article at http://cenm.ag/climatescience in which Shakhashiri discusses the toolkit and its importance.

Members of the working group:

  • Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, Ph.D., William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea, the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Scientists have a responsibility to help non-scientists understand a science-based issue like global climate change, even if they are not in a field directly related to climate science. The good news is that a great deal of excellent material on climate science, most often associated with global climate change, is available from print and electronic resources. The bad news is that there is so much available that it is a daunting task to know where to begin to learn enough to be helpful to others. An ACS Presidential Climate Science Working Group has developed a concise, web-based Climate Science Toolkit designed to engage ACS members in learning the fundamentals of climate science so those who take on their responsibility to the public have an entry point to the depth of material available to learn more. In this presentation we will examine the principles that guided development of the Toolkit and how it might be used.

Baffled by climate change? New interactive tools demystify the science behind climate change

What?s different about the climate change we are experiencing now, relative to the many changes in earth?s climate in the past? Can?t the oceans absorb the extra CO2 that humans are putting into the atmosphere? Is it true that laughing gas contributes to climate change? And do we need to worry about a runaway greenhouse effect from methane clathrate hydrates? The challenges seem enormous ? is there anything I can do that could possibly make a difference? In this talk, we introduce a comprehensive set of interactive, web-based tools that will help you answer these and many other questions, and make connections between fundamental concepts in chemistry and the science of climate change. Learn more about the materials at http://www.explainingclimatechange.com, created as a legacy of the International Year of Chemistry by the team at the King?s Centre for Visualization in Science (http://www.kcvs.ca) in partnership with IUPAC, UNESCO, RSC and ACS.

Air pollution and climate change: Integrating lessons from the past

1. Barbara J. Finlayson-Pitts1, Ph.D., University California Irvine, Department of Chemistry, 328 Rowland Hall, Irvine, CA, 92697-2025, United States, 949- 824-7670, bjfinlay@uci.edu
Air pollution and climate are very closely intertwined in many ways, including the science behind them. However, the connection between them is often not recognized, hindering the translation of what we have learned from one to the other. Examples of their interconnectedness and what we can learn from this will be discussed. In addition, a successful summer workshop for high school teachers designed to provide the fundamental chemistry behind air pollution and climate will be described.

Climate communication from a science perspective

1. Richard C.J. Somerville1, Ph.D., Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, 9500 Gilman Drive, Dept. 0224, La Jolla, CA, 92093-0224, United States, 858-534-4644, rsomerville@ucsd.edu
Scientists as a group are widely admired and can often use their prestige as well as their technical knowledge to advantage in publicizing and illuminating the findings of climate science. However, most scientists are unaware of the main obstacles to effective communication, such as the distrust that arises when the scientist and the audience do not have a shared worldview and shared cultural values. Many climate scientists also fail to realize that their jargon and specialized terminology are significant barriers to communication, and that their messages require skilled translation into understandable everyday language. The people whom one is trying to reach are rarely hungry for pure scientific information, but instead want to know how climate change will affect them, and especially what can be done about it.

Communication and climate science

Understanding science is vital, communicating science equally so. Scientists have a responsibility to communicate effectively.

Search called off for father daughter Ohio kayakers

By Andrew Rafferty, Staff Writer, NBC News

Authorities have suspended the search for a father and his 12-year-old daughter who were last seen kayaking in Lake Erie in Ohio.

Rescue teams recovered two empty kayaks from Sandusky Bay on Sunday, but there was no sign of the girl or her 30-year-old father, officials said. The two are not believed to have been wearing life jackets.?

The two were first reported missing early Sunday by friend after the two failed to return from a trip they embarked on an evening earlier, according to police records. The U.S. Coast Guard, along with local police and fire officials combed over the Lake Erie shoreline and Sandusky.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced on Sunday they had suspended the active search. Rescue efforts from local authorities have also been suspended.?

Obamacare Adds $40 Billion Cost to Immigration Reform Bill - The ...

By JAVIER MANJARRES

Rubio Cuba PACA bipartisan immigration reform bill that is being spearheaded by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and his ?Gang of 8? Senators, ?is reported to be close to completion, and could be presented in the coming weeks.

But what many ?in the pro-legal immigration lobby are saying is, ?I told you so.? ?This after Republican staffers of several of the Republican Senators who sit the Senate Budget Committee announced that ?a draft immigration bill that includes a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants? is estimated to cost Americans $40 billion in 2022, and that is ?just for Medicaid and ObamaCare.?

The costs would be incurred if those illegal immigrants, who are put on a pathway to citizenship under the new bill, use their immigration status ? to apply for federal benefits from Medicaid and ObamaCare.?

// ]]>
Payments from Medicaid and subsidies from the federal health care law represent just a fraction of federal government benefits that a green-card holder or U.S. citizen can apply for.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a key member of the ?Gang of Eight? which is drafting a proposal, has stressed that he would ensure there are limits on benefits being applied to these individuals. He told Fox News in January that the first phase for them would be to get a nonimmigrant visa ? not a green card ? ?and you don?t qualify for any federal benefits under that. You don?t get federal benefits.?-Fox News

Rubio says he will stand firm on the initial ?statement of principles? that his bipartisan group had offered, and that he will not support a final bill that veers off from what he originally envisioned an immigration reform bill would look like.

For it to be a proposal that I can support it?s going to have things that ensure that this never happens again?I want to make sure that anyone that is doing it right, who is immigrating legally is not disadvantage. Rubio adds, In essense, it can?t be easier to immigrate her illegally than it is to immigrate here legally.-Sen. Marco Rubio

When asked if he would pull out of the bipartisan immigration reform initiative, if the Democrats decide to steer the bill in favor of a pathway to citizenship that Rubio opposes, Rubio stated the following:

It?s not about pulling out or making conditions for people, I just don?t think it would work, and I am not interested in being part of an immigration reform effort that ends up making the problem worse, or leading for illegal immigration growing in the future, so it has to be something that?s going to work-Sen. Marco Rubio

As we stated before, by the time this supposed bipartisan immigration reform bill is dropped in the Senate, and/or when it is put up for discussion, expect the bill to be so heavily influenced by President Obama and his pro-illegal immigration lobby, that it will force Rubio to pull his support. We could be wrong, but I seriously doubt that will be the case.

Texas prosecutor and wife shot multiple times: investigation

By Chris Francescani

KAUFMAN, Texas (Reuters) - The Texas prosecutor and his wife who were shot at their home on Saturday each suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and sheriff's deputies found cartridge casings next to their bodies, according to an affidavit reviewed by Reuters on Tuesday.

District Attorney Mike McLelland, and his wife, Cynthia McLelland, were shot dead in their home two months after McLelland publicly vowed to track down the killer of Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse, shot dead in public on January 31.

The twin killings have rocked mostly rural Kaufman County on the eastern outskirts of Dallas, and several law enforcement officials have called them a direct attack on the criminal justice system.

Sheriff's deputies at the McLelland home "observed cartridge casings inside the residence near the two bodies during a protective sweep of the residence. Kaufman County Sheriff's Office personnel also observed multiple gunshot wounds on both victims," said the sworn statement by an investigator.

Investigators attempting to find a link between the two crimes were unable to recover any shell casings when Hasse was killed in the middle of the day near the Kaufman town square.

The Dallas Morning News, citing a law enforcement official, had previously reported shell casings were scattered about the crime scene at the McLelland home. The Forth Worth Star-Telegram first reported on the affidavit in Tuesday's editions.

Authorities have kept quiet about potential suspects, while people in town speculated it was the work of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, a white supremacist jail gang. Dozens of its members were charged with crimes in an multi-agency investigation that included McLelland's office.

First Assistant District Attorney Brandi Fernandez was named interim district attorney on Monday and will hold the position for 21 days, or until Governor Rick Perry appoints a successor.

She takes over an office with three unsolved, high-profile homicides in which two of the victims held positions similar to her own.

"She's a very capable, well-known assistant D.A. in our office. A very bright person, she's very knowledgeable and will do a great job as interim. I have full faith in her abilities to do that," County Judge Bruce Wood, who leads the county's five-member political board, told reporters on Tuesday.

"I am optimistic," Wood said regarding the criminal investigation. "There are literally hundreds of people that are working this case. I am confident they will find whoever committed this crime."

Kaufman County, population 110,000, is generally split between rural towns in the eastern part of the county and more affluent Dallas commuter suburbs in the west, where the McLellands lived. The town of Kaufman, population 11,000, lies in the middle of the county, about 30 miles east of Dallas.

Too early for 2016? Not for Hillary Clinton's fans

(AP) ? Hillary Rodham Clinton stayed on safe political ground Tuesday, advocating women's rights globally in a 12-minute speech, but that was enough to excite fans imploring the former first lady, senator and secretary of state to run again for president three years from now.

Clinton, perhaps as popular as ever in her 22 years in national politics, said she has "unwavering faith in the untapped potential of women and girls." She spoke at the Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards, at Washington's Kennedy Center. The event, highlighting efforts such as expanding education for girls and fighting domestic violence worldwide, marked her first public speech since ending her much-praised stint as secretary of state.

As members of the group Ready for Hillary cheered outside, the 2016 political buzz was inevitable. Vice President Joe Biden ? another potential Democratic candidate ? spoke later at the same event.

If Clinton has any jealousy, she didn't show it. She praised Biden effusively, especially for his role in Congress' recent renewal of the Violence Against Women Act.

Biden returned the compliment a half-hour later, after Clinton had left the stage, telling the mostly female audience of more than 2,000 that "there's no woman like Hillary Clinton."

Biden said Clinton's declaration in China nearly two decades ago ? "Women's rights are human rights," she said at the time ? "still echoes forcefully around the world." Women everywhere, he said, "are entitled to every single opportunity that any man is."

Clinton, 65, has said she has no plans for a second presidential bid, but she hasn't ruled it out. Democrats argue among themselves whether she has the desire and energy to go through the grueling campaign process she knows so well. But many see her as a prohibitive favorite whose head start would be so big that other potential candidates might starve for funds and attention.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll in January found that 67 percent of Americans held a favorable view of Clinton. That's her highest rating since the poll began measuring her popularity in the 1990s. It spans her eight years in the Senate.

"It's hard to overstate the breadth and depth of enthusiasm for a Hillary run," said Doug Hattaway, a former Clinton campaign aide and now a Washington-based consultant. She built a national base of supporters in 2008, when she lost a hard-fought nomination fight to Barack Obama, and she's widely respected after her turn heading the State Department, Hattaway said.

"A lot of donors, volunteers and potential campaign workers will wait to hear what she decides before committing to other candidates," he said, although "anyone with their eye on 2016 is already working on it."

Mo Elleithee, a top spokesman for Clinton's 2008 campaign, said it's much too early to press her for an answer.

"My advice to everyone is to chill out," Elleithee said. "There's no need for all this breathless anticipation at this point," he said, and political activists should focus on next year's mid-term elections.

Noting that Clinton said she has no intention of running, he said, "I think that's where her head is." But he said he shares "the enthusiasm" for a Clinton candidacy.

There may be no one in America with a clearer view of what it takes to run for president.

Clinton was a highly visible adviser and defender of her husband, Bill, then the Arkansas governor, when he was elected president in 1992 in 1996. Her eight years as first lady included the excruciating Monica Lewinsky scandal and her husband's impeachment.

On the same day her husband's successor was elected, Clinton handily won a Senate seat from New York. She breezed to re-election in 2006 and was the early favorite for the 2008 presidential nomination.

But Obama used his early opposition to the Iraq war, plus a keen understanding of how to win small states' delegates, to outmaneuver the Clinton team. Obama promptly tapped his former rival to be secretary of state, assuring Clinton another prime post at the center of national policy and politics.

Some Democrats want the party to look to younger candidates, noting that Clinton will turn 69 shortly before Election Day 2016, and Biden will turn 74 soon after. Those drawing notice include New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, 55, and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, 50.

As runner-up in the 2008 Democratic primary, Clinton arguably is the party's heir apparent. Republicans, not Democrats, typically nominate the next-in-line contender.

With the early GOP presidential picture wildly scrambled, it's possible that Republicans will tap a newer, younger nominee while Democrats consider one of the nation's best-known figures, and certainly the most high-profile female politician.

Clinton is scheduled to speak Friday at the Women in the World Summit in New York.

U.S. woman kidnapped, raped on Rio bus

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? An American woman was gang raped and beaten aboard a public transport van while her French boyfriend was shackled, hit with a crowbar and forced to watch the attacks after the pair boarded the vehicle in Rio de Janeiro's showcase Copacabana beach neighborhood, police said.

A third man, aged 21, was arrested for the attacks, which took place over six hours starting shortly after midnight on Saturday, police said in a Tuesday statement. Two men aged 20 and 22 had already been taken into custody for the attacks, police said. and a young Brazilian woman has come forward to say that she, too, was raped by the same men in the van on March 23.

"The victims described everything in great detail, mostly the sexual violence," police officer Rodrigo Brant told the Globo TV network. "Just how they described the facts was shocking ? the violence and brutality. It surprised even us, who work in security and are used to hearing such things. Their report shocked us."

The incidents raise new questions about security in Rio, which has cracked down on once-endemic drug violence in preparation for hosting next year's football World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympic games. The city will also be playing host to World Youth Day, a Roman Catholic pilgrimage that will be attended by Pope Francis and is expected to draw some 2 million people in late July.

Officials from the local Olympic and World Cup organizing committees didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

The attack also drew comparisons with the fatal December beating and gang rape of a young woman on a New Delhi bus. Six men beset a 23-year-old university student and male friend after they boarded a private bus, touching off a wave of protests across India demanding stronger protection for women. Officials there say tourism has dropped in the country following the attacks.

In the Brazil case, a police statement said the suspects forced other passengers to get out of the van and then raped the female tourist inside the vehicle, which was one of a fleet of vans that serve bus routes and seat about a dozen people.

Such van services are often linked to organized crime in Rio, particularly the militias largely comprised of former police and firemen that control large swaths of the city's slums and run clandestine services such as transportation and sell cooking fuel and illegal cable TV hookups. In general, tourists avoid the vans and opt for regular buses or taxis.

Sexual assaults on tourists are not common in Rio, with muggings and petty crime reported more frequently.

During the assault, the two foreigners were driven to the poor neighborhood of Sao Goncalo, where the two suspects were apprehended, a police statement said.

Reports said the two foreigners had been studying Portuguese in Rio for about a month and both left Brazil following the attack.

The police statement said that one victim's cellphone was found in the suspects' possession. The suspects had also used a debit card belonging to one of the victims at two gas stations, it said.

The Globo television network broadcast surveillance camera images of two men filling up the white van and showed police images of a crowbar the suspects used to beat and intimidate the victims. The victims positively identified the two suspects.

In an interview with Globo television, commanding officer Alexandre Braga, who heads the Rio police unit specializing in crimes against tourists, said the suspects had gone on a sex crime spree.

"The characteristics of both crimes, both the Brazilian case and the one with the foreigners, lead us to believe that they (the suspects) wanted to have a 'party of evil,' in quotes," Braga said. "The principal motive appears to have been the satisfaction of their lust."

He added that the robbery and other crimes appear to have been "secondary."

Multiple calls to police seeking further details on Tuesday were not immediately returned.

In Brazil, more than 5,300 cases of sexual assault were reported between January and June 2012, according to the country's Health Ministry.
