Tips for Brewing Your Own Hard Cider | Care2 Healthy Living

???In some parts of the country, hard cider has grown from a down-home project to a mass-marketed trendy drink. To brew your own requires few materials outside of care and cleanliness. David Shearer, owner of Pine Hill Orchard in Colrain, MA shared a few secrets about brewing your own hard cider. ?Most people, when they are starting out, use one five-gallon carboy and pail,? said Shearer who has been experimenting with brewing hard cider since 1970. A ?carboy,? which is sometimes referred to as a ?demijohn,? is essentially a jug with a large body and a small neck. Carboys can be made of glass or plastic.

Other materials you will need include three to six feet of food grade plastic tubing for siphoning or ?racking? your cider, and an airlock which fits into the top of your carboy. An airlock for fermenting cider, beer, etc. looks like a glass or plastic flat bubble with chambers on a cork. ?The real secret to making the best hard cider is to keep air out as much as possible. It?s an anaerobic process,? said Shearer.

You can time fermentation to coincide with a holiday party, or you will need clean bottles, caps, and a capper to store your hard cider. Shearer said that it?s best to drink your hard cider within the first year, but it can be stored for two to three years. ?I had an old farmer give me a bottle he had in his basement he said was one hundred years old. It wasn?t great, but it still tasted OK,? said Shearer with a laugh.

Naturally, you will need apple cider and possibly sugar, maple syrup, or beet sugar to increase the alcohol content. Any unpasteurized apple cider will do, but Shearer said that using a blend of ciders makes for better flavor. ?Traditionally, Baldwins, Northern Spys, or Granny Smiths are used, but they are a little harder to find these days as fewer people grow them,? he said.

Once you have selected your cider to ferment, pour it into a sterilized carboy or a specialized bucket that has an opening on the lid for an airlock. Place the airlock (also called a vapor lock) onto the well-sealed carboy or bucket and let your cider go to work!

Shearer said yeast is not required to brew hard cider, as the fruit contains its own yeasts. You can, however, choose to use champagne yeast to speed up the process.

Fermentation starts right away, and can take three to four weeks from start to finish. Generally, if you keep your cider in an area that is 65 to 70 degrees, the fermentation will take about two weeks ? you?ll hear it bubbling. If your cider gets too cold, it will stop fermenting. You will want to let the cider sit at least another week, then siphon it off into another sterilized bucket to help ?clarify? your cider, as there will be a sludge of organic material on the bottom of the carboy or bucket. Some like to let their hard cider sit another week (in a well-sealed sterilized bucket) and rack it one more time before drinking or bottling.

Shearer said that hard cider has an average alcohol content of three to four percent unless sugar is added. ?You can add up to a pound of sugar to the cider, and that will bring the alcohol content up to seven to nine percent. Once hard cider has an alcohol content of nine percent, it won?t ferment anymore (as all the organisms needed to ferment die off at that point),? he said.

Shearer said that in terms of recipes, the real ?secret? is in experimenting and finding out what you really like ? sweet, dry, tart, etc. Shearer said that, for one person, he even ground sugar beets with the apples to eventually make a kind of ?pink champagne.?

Default Tricks ? Car loans have many advantages ? a look at them

Purchasing a new car is a time for excellent excitement but you may feel daunted at the extremely thought of applying for an auto loan. Loans, by themselves, produce images of so many complications and tiresome details that you can always be forgiven for merely dreaming about that automobile instead of applying for that auto loan. Leasing a vehicle may seem a more appealing option with lower hassles. But, if you only show a number of patience and put in some hard work in get together and understanding details about auto finance, the benefits of availing of car loans can be a lot when compared to simple leasing.

One of the major great things about opting for Car Loans is with every monthly payment which you make you are usually closer to owning the car yourself. Once you pay back the loan that residence becomes yours. In case you lease a car, the car is rented to get a specific period of time and has to be returned. Extra-mileage, insurance plan and rental fees are some of the expenses that you?ve to bear for a auto which eventually should be returned. With automobile loans, you do not have to worry about extra-mileage costs as there is no limit to the miles that you can drive. Even regarding insurance, with an auto loan, the damages to become paid depends upon the market industry rate of the automobile.

The other major benefit in a car loan is you get refinancing advantage. Most of the auto loan loan providers are only too pleased to refinance your loan by simply lending you enough money to pay off your earlier loan. This means that the monthly payments become smaller sized and you can also help save substantially on rates of interest if the finance terminology are written off.

Not like leases which probably hidebound for that period of time, a lot of car loans do not inflict penalties for early pay off. This gives you the benefit of flexibility wherein you can pay off sooner than your scheduled time frame without incurring virtually any finance charges. An early on pay off also means that if you had a poor credit standing, you get a chance to boost your credit score which further activly works to your advantage as it makes it much simpler for you to successfully apply for loans in future. When you?re done with your benefits, your funds will also get free to handle other financial priorities.

The opposite benefit of refinance Consumer Car Loan is that you can pay off your own auto loan with a different type of loan where the interest charges are tax-deductible. An auto loan organization will require you to keep a certain period of time for insurance during the agreement period. With an first pay off you can reduce the length of insurance coverage and make adjustments to the policy upon more affordable lines.

Inmates Paint Murals at a Community Correction Center in Fayetteville

Normally, jail isn?t a very nice place to be, but there?s a program in Washington County at the old county jail that?s helping to brighten up the place and the lives of the ladies inside.

At the Northwest Arkansas Community Correction Center in Fayetteville, ladies who are non-violent offenders spend up to two years paying their debt to society.

It could be a dark and dingy place to be, but a special program allows certain inmates to paint murals on the prison walls as a form of therapy.

It helps them create something beautiful, and gives them confidence in their efforts to rehabilitate.

Maggie Capel, the center supervisor, says, ?The women, the residents have done the murals. The vision, one area of the murals depicts Downtown Fayetteville in the 1950?s. In another hallways the theme is outdoor scenes from Northwest Arkansas.?

There isn?t much light in the hallways, but these residents help brighten the place up.

It also helps brighten the mood of the residents who take part in the painting program.

Samantha Coggins can?t wait to show her new found skills to her family.

?I have a small child and I?m learning things that I can do with her when I get home. It?s exciting to know that there is artistic ability that I didn?t even know I had.?

For those who need help, the center offers volunteer help from the NWA Art Community.

The residents are happy to have the help, and the volunteers also find their own special kind of inspiration.

Nadine Ripplemeyer owns The Art Location in Fayetteville.

?I always come back feeling better than when I came. To know that my knowledge and the art I?ve done can help people is great. Art is something you can do for the rest of your life.?

Cherry Keaton, a volunteer, says, ?I really feel a little selfish about it because I walk away feeling so blessed from visiting with these women who inspire me to paint more. It also is good to see them grow as artists. It?s been amazing.?

Painting the murals doesn?t help the residents get out faster, but there?s no doubt it gives them a chance to gain self confidence in their ability to make a positive contribution.

The residents take part in a last chance rehabilitation program.

If they complete the requirements, they are released without having to go to state prison.

It?s not the paint or the brush, but the commitment of the residents to try and become a productive member of society.

tekom12: Top 12 lessons learned & 3 unique features ? Kai's Tech ...

Posted on by Kai

tekom, the world?s largest tech comm conference, ended today after three days with more than 220 presentations, workshops and tutorials in German and English. (More detailed numbers and much, much more conference blogging over at Sarah Maddox? blog.) Here are 12 lessons that I learned and 3 ways how I think tekom is unique and different from other conferences I?ve been to, such as TCUK, the STC Summit or WritersUA.

What I learned

5 lessons about tech comm:

  1. ?Cheap documentation is expensive!? ? From Sarah O?Keefe?s session on Transforming Technical Content into a Business Asset.
  2. ?Poor design costs!? ? From Leah Guren?s Advanced Visual Editing.
  3. Reuse or conditionalize complete sentences, no less. Else it becomes virtually impossible to translate in DITA or otherwise. ? From Marijana Prusina?s tutorial Around the World with DITA (in German).
  4. Cross-language documentation works. German and English are related so closely, you can successfully create German documentation for English interfaces. You will need to pay some attention to grammar, spelling and anglicisms, though. ? From Marc Achtelig?s Do you speak Deutsch? (in German).
  5. Cloud-based terminology is coming. The European Union funds a cloud-based Terminology as a Service project. ? From Klaus Schmitz? Terminological Information and Services for Language Workers (in German).

And 7 lessons about tech comm conferences:

  1. Have business cards handy. Even ?after-hours? over beer, they might just get you a cool free t-shirt by Atlassian that says ?Don?t drink and write.?
  2. Maintain a network. A good network of fellow tech comm?ers can help you in more situations than I imagined. ? From the Strategic Technical Communicator panel. And from lining up a few more speaking opportunities by tapping my, uhm: network? :-)
  3. Have worthwhile content. High-concept talks will fail if the first half is trends and statistics which any listener will know who?s keeping up with industry news and the second half is about the great things your company does. ? From a session I marked down on the evaluation sheet.
  4. Unusual topics work. Presentations, such as how meaning works in tech comm, can succeed if you have a well-told, well-sourced story, even if the research is a bit farther afield, for example, from semiotics or psychology.
  5. Know your audience. The rift between academia and tech comm?ers will persist if research feels like institutions and budgets trying to justify themselves. I think presentations of academic research will be more successful if they appeal to a common interest in how and why stuff works. German academic speakers, please know your audience and front-load the cool benefits you can bring, not your definitions and methodology.
  6. Know time. Speakers, please practice and if necessary cut down your talk: Running late and then skipping over the last slides is doubly annoying. Unless you?ve been added to the program late, you?ve had plenty of advance notice!
  7. Have some integrity. It?s fine to talk about yourself if you have a good story, but please don?t undermine your session title and audience expectations. ?Be more like me!? is not a widely applicable answer to ?How to do X??

How tekom is unique

  1. Size. tekom is first and foremost uniquely large, it is huuuuge! 2400 registered attendants attending 15 concurrent streams of sessions takes a convention center, not a conference hotel as I know it from other tech comm conferences. Because it is so huge, you need more planning to ensure you?re hitting the best sessions.
  2. Global and bilingual. Even though it is predominantly a German conference, it is the most successfully international, multi-lingual conference I know. A quarter of all presentations, workshops and tutorials are in English. My personal impression is that attendees come from more countries than to any conference.
  3. Variety in content. Because of the huge number of sessions, tekom affords more variety in sessions than I?ve seen elsewhere. Streams are dedicated to the usual suspects, such as content strategy, localization, mobile documentation, user assistance. Add to that more unusual, but valuable streams, such as higher education and academia, visual communication, personnel and cost management.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make this year?s conference a success, especially to tekom?s dedicated conference crew!

-Oh, and as it turns out: You?ve just reached the end of my 200th blog post? :-) Thanks for reading, thank you for your support!

S.Africa union agrees gold mine pay deal as most strikers return

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's gold mines agreed a wage deal with unions on Thursday as the bulk of the gold sector's striking miners returned to work under threat of dismissal.

The returns marked success of a sort for a new tough approach by mining firms, but at least 12,000 gold and 20,000 platinum miners were still pursuing a wave of unofficial strikes that have cost Africa's largest economy over 10 billion rand this year, according to the National Treasury.

About 100,000 workers in all have downed tools across South Africa since August in a wave of violent strikes that have triggered downgrades of South Africa's credit ratings, and awkward questions for President Jacob Zuma and the ruling ANC.

After three weeks of negotiations, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the gold industry, which employs around 157,000, announced agreement on wage increases of between 1.5 and 10.8 percent for different categories of mine workers.

Harmony Gold, South Africa's third-largest producer, said most of the 5,400 strikers at its Kusasalethu mine were now back at work. Strikes at Gold Fields' three mines are also now over.

"Stability in the gold mining industry has been achieved at many of the operations and there are hopes that this trend will continue," said Chamber of Mines executive Elize Strydom.

But AngloGold Ashanti, South Africa's biggest producer, said on Wednesday it had sacked around half of its 24,000-strong local workforce who had ignored an ultimatum to return to work or be fired.

PLATINUM STRIKES

And a six-week strike at Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), the world's top producer of the metal, is no closer to ending, with 20,500 workers at its Union and Amandelbult operations still holding out for higher wages.

Amplats has also sacked 12,000 wildcat strikers at its Rustenburg mines.

Zuma has come in for particular criticism for not responding faster to the August 16 police killing of 34 strikers at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine, the bloodiest security incident since the end of white-minority rule in 1994.

Reluctant to take a hard line in the weeks after the "Marikana massacre", Amplats and then gold firms led by Gold Fields have since got increasingly tough with the strikers, issuing threats of mass sackings.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan cut South Africa's GDP forecast for the year to 2.5 percent from 2.7 percent and said it would take the government some time to determine the full impact of the mining strife on growth.

"Declining mining output and the spread of strike activity has depressed activity in related industries including manufacturing, logistics and services, with negative consequences for GDP," the Treasury said in its interim budget policy statement.

In the year to August, mining output fell by 3.3 percent, with production of platinum group metals 15.3 percent lower, although strong iron ore demand from China helped offset some of the decline in the platinum, gold and coal sectors, it added.

Amplats on Thursday cut its full-year production target and capital expenditure plans after revealing that the walkouts had sliced 138,000 ounces off output, $217 million at today's price.

A look at recent tech-industry earnings

Technology companies have begun releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. The reports come as consumers shift their spending toward tablets and a weak global economy curbs corporate spending on computers. They also come as Microsoft prepares to release a new version of Windows on Friday. Here is a summary of recent earnings and reports for selected technology companies and what they reveal about the state of spending and the overall economy.

? Oct. 5: Samsung Electronics Co. forecast another record quarterly operating profit, likely driven by strong sales of high-end smartphones that offset weak semiconductor orders. Samsung estimated that its July-September operating income nearly doubled to 8.1 trillion won ($7.3 billion) from 4.25 trillion won a year earlier. The result was better than the market consensus of 7.6 trillion won. Full results are expected Oct. 26.

? Oct. 16: Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, says net income fell 14 percent from last year in the latest quarter, and it's looking at tough conditions in the new quarter. Intel blames a difficult global economy for declining sales, but analysts believe a shift in spending from PCs to tablets and smartphones may be contributing.

IBM Corp. says revenue slipped below Wall Street's expectations in the third quarter as the technology company dealt with jittery customers and a weakening euro that undercut its results. Despite the problems posed by the wobbly economy, IBM's earnings held steady.

? Oct. 17: eBay Inc. says its third-quarter net income grew 22 percent, helped by higher revenue at its PayPal payments service and the marketplaces business that includes eBay.com.

? Oct. 18: Google Inc. reports earnings and revenue that fell well below analyst projections. Most of Google's third-quarter headaches were concentrated in Motorola Mobility, the troubled cellphone maker that the company bought for $12.4 billion in May.

Microsoft Corp. says net income fell 22 percent in the latest quarter as it deferred revenue from the sale of its upcoming Windows 8 operating system to PC makers ? and as PC sales in general took a dive. The economic troubles in Europe also weighed on results, which missed Wall Street expectations.

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. says it will cut nearly 1,800 jobs, about 15 percent of its workforce, by the end of the year in order to reduce spending in the face of dwindling sales.

Verizon Communications Inc. reports a blow-out number of new devices on its wireless network, boosted by the revolutionary Share Everything plan, which made it cheaper for households to add wireless service to non-phone devices like tablets and laptops. Verizon Wireless added a net 1.5 million devices to contract-based plans in the third quarter, more than it has in many years.

? Monday: Yahoo Inc. issued a third-quarter earnings report that topped analyst estimates. Yahoo's net revenue barely grew at a time when advertisers are spending more money marketing their products and services online. But the numbers were slightly better than analysts projected. It's the first quarter under new CEO Marissa Mayer.

? Tuesday: Facebook Inc. reports third-quarter results that inch past Wall Street's expectations, offering evidence that the company is making inroads in mobile advertising ? a longtime concern among investors.

Netflix Inc. cut its prediction of how many video streaming subscribers it would add this year after its third-quarter additions of 1.2 million came in at the low end of the company's forecasts.

Apple refreshes its lineup of Mac computers and introduces a 13-inch MacBook Pro model with a sharper, Retina display. It announces new iMacs for later this year, along with a faster, full-sized iPad tablet and a smaller one called the iPad Mini.

? Wednesday: Zynga Inc. reports stronger-than-expected revenue for the third quarter. The company, which has been trying to convince investors that it can revive growth, says it has signed a deal to offer online poker and casino games, played with real money, in the U.K. It plans to launch those games in the first half of 2013.

AT&T Inc. reports numbers showing the flow of customers to the carrier slowed further, putting the company far behind rival Verizon Wireless. AT&T added a net 151,000 new customers on contract-based plans from July through September, the lowest number for that period since at least 2003.

Coming up:

? Thursday: Apple Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp., Amazon.com Inc.

? Friday: Samsung Electronics Co., Comcast Corp.

? Nov. 1: Sony Corp., LinkedIn Corp.

? Nov. 8: Groupon Inc.

? Nov. 13: Cisco Systems Inc.

? Nov. 20: Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Inc.

? Dec. 20: Research In Motion Ltd.

NJ rules against group in civil union case

NEWARK, N.J. --?

The director of the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights says a group affiliated with the Methodist Church discriminated against a lesbian couple.

The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association didn't let the couple use its boardwalk pavilion for a 2007 civil union ceremony.

The venue overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and was advertised for weddings.

Director Craig Sashihara says the association violated the state's anti-discrimination law by not allowing a civil union to take place in the pavilion.

Sashihara says the group receives tax breaks requiring the pavilion to be open to all. He said it must abide by public accommodation laws because people use it when there are no events.

The decision upholds a January ruling by an administrative law judge.

The group could not be reached for comment.

Britney Spears hooked on drugs in 2007, former confidante testifies

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop star Britney Spears' former confidante encouraged her to kick her drug habit five years ago, and brought drug-sniffing dogs to her Malibu home and flushed a bag of white powder down the toilet, he testified Tuesday.

"She had wanted to get clean, but she was struggling with it," the former friend, Sam Lutfi, told jurors in his civil trial in Los Angeles against Spears and her parents.

"I told her she needed to do it because she was the mother of two young sons... I told her that society wouldn't tolerate a mother who was abusing drugs."

Lutfi claims that Spears hired him as her manager for several months in 2007 and 2008, after she became estranged from her family and staff in the midst of a personal and professional breakdown.

He is seeking 15 percent of her earnings from that period, which were believed to be $800,000 to $1 million per month.

Attorneys representing Spears argue that Lutfi was never the singer's manager.

Lutfi said he met Spears in a nightclub in spring of 2007, while she was embroiled in a tough child custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline and struggling to kick drug addiction.

"She wasn't working. She said that she had fired everybody," Lutfi said. "She told me that she had fired her agent. She told me that she had fired her manager, her bodyguards, her publicist, as well."

Spears told him she infamously shaved her head in February 2007 because she was afraid her hair could be tested for drugs and used against her in her child custody battle against Federline, Lutfi testified.

"Britney was involved in a wicked child custody battle," Lutfi said. "She told me someone had told her that they can scientifically test her hair for a history of drug use, so she shaved it off."

The trial has torn the veil off Spears' meltdown when she was twice hospitalized, lost custody of her children, and photographs of her shaving her head and swinging an umbrella made international headlines.

Lutfi is also suing Spears' mother, alleging she libeled him in her 2008 book, "Through the Storm", in which she claimed Lutfi destroyed Britney Spears' telephone lines, may have drugged her food and tried to cut off the singer from her family. He is suing Spears' father for assault.

INSISTENT SPEARS

Lutfi testified on Tuesday that Spears offered him a job as her manager soon after they met.

Lutfi, a college dropout who dabbled in the entertainment industry, at first doubted he was qualified to take the position, but Spears kept asking, he testified.

Finally, he agreed to take the job, but on two conditions: Britney would stop taking drugs and allow him to bring in an agent and a lawyer to make up for his inexperience.

"She agreed," Lutfi said. "We even shook hands on it."

Lutfi said he brought the drug-sniffing dogs to her home on June 13, 2007, as one of his first actions as the pop star's manager.

He also advised her against going on tour that year because he feared she would have easy access to drugs and would miss out on visits with her young sons, Lutfi testified.

Lutfi said Spears had a drug relapse in September 2007 and called him in October after spending a night in her car. She asked him to move in with her, although their relationship was strictly professional, and never romantic, he said.

Lutfi told jurors he was never compensated for his work and his out-of-pocket expenses were never repaid.

Earlier this week, the record label executive who signed Spears when she was 16 testified that he believed Lutfi was a "gofer" who performed only menial tasks for the "Toxic" singer.

Spears, who has not attended the trial, was placed under her father's conservatorship in 2008, giving him control of her health and finances. Now 30, she has made a comeback with world tours, hit albums and a new job as a judge on TV talent show "The X Factor."

Affiliate Marketing Is A Great Way To Boost Profits | Eric Chua : Life ...

Sometimes, we come up with ideas that would make a great business. You could easily make this dream come true thanks to the internet, but do not expect to make a profit unless you are ready to approach this business venture seriously and educate yourself about internet promotion. Continue reading in order to gain some valuable and insightful tips which can assist you with your endeavor.

Measure your marketing impact by applying technological methods that are able to gauge how many web visitors actually end up purchasing your products or services. Many major online companies offer a variety of easily customized integrated web add-ons and trackers that compare the number of visitors against the number of sales and repeat visitors.

Power up your online marketing! Have a clear and stated goal on the front page of your site. Your site is about selling the product. It should be obvious to the viewer what it is that you are selling as soon as they arrive on the landing page! If your site confuses visitors, they?ll just click away from it.

TIP! Include the word ?limited? in your ad. Online shopping is done a lot of the time because people are sick of what their stores have.

Make sure that your website is both current and intriguing. The success of any Web marketing campaign depends on how well the website is created. Your website should be well-designed and interesting to those that enter, so that they want to stay. Engaging the visitor is key, because as they build interest, they stay longer and purchase more often.

Put serious thought into your site tags since they define your business to the world. The title tag shows at the top left corner of the browser window. The text there conveys exactly who you are to the potential viewer. Saying the wrong thing, having confusing information or just not targeting the audience with your message can be a determining factor in whether or not prospects stay on the site.

Internet marketing will go more smoothly for you if you create a viral video. Within the video?s description, be sure to include a link to your website. If your video is a success you will find that your website?s traffic will explode.

TIP! Whether you realize it or not, you have everything that you need to make your internet marketing venture a success. You don?t need any special software or tools that promise overnight success; you just need your own hands and mind to succeed.

Make sure you diversify when you are planning your Internet promotion strategies. This applies to this sort of business, because it often takes time for these businesses to become established and to turn any major profit. So never give up a stable job unless you are certain this new job can be profitable.

Web marketing takes a lot of skill, from an artistic and scientific perspective. Try to understand and master each side before you begin your internet promotion strategy. You need to be able to be rational about analyzing profits, traffic figures, and a whole host of statistics, but you also need to be as creative as possible when you come up with the design aspects of your marketing campaign.

Give potential customers a reason to visit your site. Try having a buy one get one sale on a product! When people enter your site to purchase the e-book, they?ll probably look around at what else you offer. Many times these visitors don?t just leave with the e-book, but with other products you sell.

TIP! Facebook and Twitter need to be part of your strong Internet marketing strategies. You can use these sites to advertise new offers or to share your latest articles.

As stated in the introduction, the top goal of a business is to stay in business. From the largest corporate giant to the smallest mom-and-pop outfit, sustainability is the true yardstick of business success. Every business starts at the bottom, so implement these tips to increase business today.

Amanda Todd, the 15-year-old Canadian teenager whose suicide earlier this month provoked a flood of sympathetic outrage, endured one torment after another in the years leading up to her death: sexual exploitation online, cyberbullying, a physical assault at school.

Suicide is always a complicated tragedy that leaves behind many questions and few answers, and Todd?s case is no different. Yet her story, and the many others like it that have made headlines recently, are a heartbreaking illustration of the link between victimization and suicide in young people.

A new study, published this week in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, offers fresh evidence for this link, showing that several types of abuse, and not just bullying, are closely associated with suicidal thoughts in children and teens.

Researchers conducted a nationally representative survey of young people between the ages of 10 and 17, interviewing them by telephone twice, in 2008 and again in 2010. ?In the last month,? one of the survey questions asked, ?how often have you wanted to kill yourself??

Overall, roughly 1 in 23 kids reported feeling this way at least once. Being bullied, attacked, physically threatened, or otherwise victimized by peers in the previous 12 months more than doubled the odds of suicidal thoughts, and experiencing any type of sexual assault?including at the hands of peers?more than tripled the odds.

Suicidal thinking, also known as suicidal ideation, doesn?t always progress to suicidal behavior (none of the participants attempted suicide during the study). But it is an important warning sign, as are depression and anxiety, which the researchers controlled for.

?Exposure to violence?not just cyberbullying, but peer violence and sexual violence?increases the risk of suicide,? says Elizabeth Miller, MD, chief of adolescent medicine at the Children?s Hospital of Pittsburgh, who was not involved in the study.

Victimization appeared to be even more harmful if it was perpetrated by adults rather than peers. Being physically or emotionally maltreated by a parent or caregiver more than quadrupled a child?s odds of suicidal thinking, the researchers found.

Not surprisingly, the risk rose higher still if a young person experienced many different types of victimization within the same year. Experiencing abuse from several directions at once is especially damaging because it can leave kids feeling they have no place to turn, says Heather A. Turner, PhD, the lead author of the study and a professor of sociology at the University of New Hampshire, in Durham.

?These are kids who experience threats to their safety and security, who have a lack of support and nurturance at home,? Turner says. ?These kinds of violent experiences not only represent an incredible amount of adversity in kids? lives but they?re likely also to damage the very resources that adolescents would normally use to help cope with these kinds of things.?

The fact that many kids are exposed to more than one type of abuse highlights the need to look beyond bullying when addressing teen suicide, says Miller. ?This kind of research helps show that when doing suicide prevention, we also need talk about other forms of violence,? she says.

Cyberbullying, which has received the most attention of late, may represent a particularly insidious form of abuse, partly because it can occur anywhere and anytime, says Victor Fornari, MD, the director of child and adolescent psychiatry at the North Shore?LIJ Health System, in New Hyde Park, N.Y.

?Traditionally, there was a distinction between the school day and after school,? says Fornari, who was not involved in the study. ?Now kids go to sleep holding their smart phones and check their social networking site before they brush their teeth in the morning. The kinds of social support that might be available at dinnertime or at school lunchtime are often not present when you?re the victim of cyberbullying.?

Bullying, whether it takes place online or face-to-face, is rarely the only driver of suicidal thinking and behavior, however. Mood disorders like depression?which Miller and her colleagues purposely sought to isolate from their findings?can also contribute to the problem, as they reportedly did in Todd?s case.

That was among the findings of a second study, also released this week, in which researchers at Dalhousie University, in Nova Scotia, compiled and analyzed media reports on 41 high-profile teen suicides dating back to 2003.

More than three-quarters of the teens had been bullied at school as well as online, much like Todd, while 17% were cyberbullied exclusively. But nearly 50% of the teens were said to have experienced symptoms of depression or a full-blown mood disorder, according to the study, which was presented on Saturday at an annual meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics, in New Orleans.

.co.uk vs .com - UK Business Forums

I know its a good idea to get both domains if possible but I've found a domain that I'd like but only the .co.uk is available. The .com version just goes to a page saying,

Quote:

An error occurred while processing your request. Reference #97.c4abef50.1350935104.9b28e0

I could probably contact the owner of that site, but if worse comes to worse is it a bad situation to only own the .co.uk? Personally I presume when someone gives me an URL that its .com? Despite .co.uk probably being better for UK businesses, but still surely its a good idea to have the .com and redirect to .co.uk

What are your views on this?

Cheers.

Tips for Selecting Folding Patio Doors that Can - My Home Sweet ...

For many homeowners patio doors can give more beauty to a home externally and internally. The extraordinary elegance can be observed when you open the interior living room of your house to merge with the garden or your pool outside. One of the innovative products introduced by manufacturers that create a positive impression to the public is the folding patio door. Some people may consider this as a luxurious item and is quiet pricey; however, this is available in variety and it can be challenging to find the right folding door for you which is offered at reasonable price.

Here are helpful tips that you can follow to select the right folding patio doors.

  • Consider How Much You Can Afford

Before you shop for a folding patio door for your home, decide first how much price range you can afford. You must also take a measurement for the opening where you will place the door. This is a very essential task as this will prevent problems like difficulty in closing the door properly. Choose the construction type you require whether hollow wood, composite materials or solid woods. Then consider the style and color you prefer for your door. Make sure the finishes will match with your house. When these preparations are done, you are now ready to go to the home improvement outlets to shop. When selecting a folding patio door you need to consider something presentable, affordable and of high quality.

  • Check the Appearance And Style

The appearance and style of your folding patio door must merge with the kind of house you have. This door system can be one factor that will change the entire ambiance of your home by simply improving its look. These doors can be made of different types of materials where you can select something that will not disturb your budget. Just make sure you have chosen the kind of material that will match your house.

  • Take into Account the Cost of the Doors

The cost of folding patio doors may differ depending on the style and type of materials it is made of. If you choose more security in your home many people claim that folding patio doors can be a good option. They are usually built with a strong frame which is made of aluminum and each of the pair is securely locked from the top as well as the bottom. The locking system is done by turning the key which is located in the vertical frame on its center. Additionally, you will not find a key hole outside the door which is another asset of safety. The cost sometimes is not given attention by homeowners as they prefer something comfortable and secure.

  • Evaluate of they Have Good Quality

When choosing a folding patio door for your house you must not sacrifice the quality for its cost. Since there are a lot of options that you can take to obtain one, make sure that they are durable and are manufactured from high quality materials. One of the important things that you have to check on your folding door is the track that it runs to. Make sure that the door you have chosen can be opened and closed smoothly. If you want a high quality door, then you must purchase it in a reputable manufacturer and when installing make sure to hire a professional.

You have a lot of option when purchasing a folding patio door. A lot of people choose glass doors because they allow a better view for the interior and exterior of the house. They will also add more attraction when it is open. There are varieties of styles like those that are made of full glass, others have sections which are glass and partly made of wood while some are made half wood and half glass. Choosing a folding door depends mainly on your personal preferences.

Senate hopeful Thompson's son says send Obama back to Kenya

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - The son of Senate candidate and former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson has apologized for telling Republicans that the November 6 election gives them the chance to send U.S. President Barack Obama back to Kenya.

Obama's father was from Kenya and his mother was from Kansas. The president was born in Hawaii.

"We have the opportunity to send President Obama back to Chicago - or Kenya," said Jason Thompson, a frequent surrogate for his father, who faces Democratic Representative Tammy Baldwin in a race for a Wisconsin U.S. Senate seat.

Wisconsin is also a battleground state in next month's presidential election.

The 38-year-old Thompson was caught on a secretly recorded videotape speaking at a brunch on Sunday organized by the local Republican Party.

Attendees could be heard chuckling and a woman said: "We are taking donations for that Kenya trip."

The elder Thompson's campaign apologized for the remarks, which were recorded by a Democrat and appeared on website BuzzFeed Politics.

"The Governor has addressed this with his son, just like any father would do," spokeswoman Lisa Boothe said in a statement. "Jason Thompson said something he should not have, and he apologizes."

"Governor Thompson was not at the event," Boothe added.

Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, attended the event along with Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Brad Courtney, according to local party spokesman Nathan Conrad.

Both condemned the remark.

"The comment was out of line and his son rightfully apologized," Priebus said in a statement.

"The Republican Party of Wisconsin does not stand by these comments," Conrad said.

A campaign spokesman for Baldwin said Jason Thompson's remarks were "divisive political tactics."

"It's disappointing and unacceptable that Thompson's campaign has crossed this line and Tommy Thompson hasn't said one word about it publicly," said spokesman John Kraus.

Some conservatives and conspiracy theorists have raised questions about whether Obama was born on foreign soil, which would make him ineligible for the presidency.

Obama released a detailed copy of his birth certificate last year that showed he was born in Hawaii to try to put an end to the widely discredited speculation.

In a Broken Student Aid System, Colleges Are Part of the Problem

Editor?s Note: This post was written by Jeff Selingo, a member of Education Sector?s K20 Task Force. Selingo, editor at large of The Chronicle of Higher Education, will be blogging regularly on The Quick & the Ed.

Chalk up yet another way families are being tapped out to pay for college: parent loans.

The amount of money distributed by the federal government through its main loan program for parents, the Plus loan, has more than doubled to $10.6 billion since 2000. Nearly twice as many borrowers are also taking out loans, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education and ProPublica. The Parent PLUS Loan, with an interest rate close to 8 percent, is essentially the last choice for parents desperate to send their sons and daughters to their first-choice school.

Families are looking under the couch cushions for pennies to pay for college these days, and higher-education institutions are searching every corner of campus for new revenue sources to finance their rising costs. The situation meets the definition of an unsustainable model for the future?for students, parents, and colleges.

In debates over college affordability, much is made about the cost side of the equation. But even if we find a magic-bullet solution, it?s unlikely to cut tuition prices in half overnight. We?ll still need to figure out how to pay the annual tuition bills with financial aid.

But the financial-aid system we currently have in place is severely broken. State and federal governments continue to pour money into the system even though we know little about what students actually learn for those dollars, if they finish at all. Institutions, especially private colleges, waste money on merit aid in a prestige race to pursue top-ranked students who would probably be better off at more selective schools and would likely go to college no matter how much aid they get.

To some colleges, financial aid has become little more than a marketing tool to fill a class. I saw that on full display last spring when I met with a small group of high-school seniors and their parents at a high school in Florida. It was a little more than week before the May deadline when they had to commit to a college, and they had brought their financial-aid offers from colleges so they could review them with counselors.

As a counselor went through the offers with one student and his mother, he glanced at his own homemade cheat sheet, and I quickly discovered why. Deciphering financial aid letters is almost impossible. Each uses different formats, difficult-to-understand abbreviations or mixes together loans and grants, blurring the lines between the two and creating confusion. The worst offenders suggest students are getting a great deal.

But no one polices these practices. Unlike when we buy a car or a house or sign up for a credit card, there are no standardized disclosure forms schools are required to hand out. The Obama administration has proposed a shopping sheet that all colleges should be required to use when they notify students about their aid packages. Ten colleges and universities have already committed to the model format.

While a good start, the biggest problem with the financial-aid system is timing. The college search starts as early as middle school for some students these days. By the time they reach their junior year of high school they often have their hearts set on a particular campus.

Families know little about what they will actually pay for college and, more important, exactly how they will finance it until a few weeks before a final decision needs to be made. During this period?March and April of the senior year of high school?the sales rhetoric from colleges turns to cold-blooded financial reality. Under pressure, families sometimes make bad financial decisions: students because they don?t know any better and parents because they don?t want to disappoint their sons and daughters.

It?s clear to me that the needed reforms for student financial-aid are unfortunately not going to come from higher education. Many financial-aid officials remain opposed to the model letter, as well as many other regulations.

Last week, I spoke to the annual meeting of the New York State association of college financial-aid advisors last week and several of them told me that they already feel over-regulated. A few said that even if they feel students are over-borrowing or a bad financial fit for the institution they feel unable to say anything because they work for the institution, not the families. Instead of being resources for students and parents, financial-aid offices at colleges have become just another cog in the wheel that brings students in the door.

Sumatran orangutan rescued in western Indonesia

(AP) ? A critically endangered Sumatran orangutan was rescued from an isolated forest area in western Indonesia where palm oil companies have been illegally destroying the environment, a conservation group said Monday.

The adult male orangutan, named Seuneam, had been trapped for several days in an area surrounded by palm oil plantations and was isolated from the rest of the surviving orangutan population in Tripa swamp in the Nagan Raya district. It was found and safely evacuated over the weekend, the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program said.

The Tripa swamp was home to around 3,000 orangutans in the 1990s but now has only about 200. Still, the population is the densest in the world with about eight per square kilometer (20 per square mile), the group said.

Tripa is a legally protected area, but several palm oil companies are under investigation for breaking the law, and the permit for one plantation has been canceled, it said.

"We are always happy to see a successful rescue take place, but these activities are expensive, logistically challenging and also dangerous, for both staff and the orangutans themselves," Ian Singleton of the group said. "It's not the orangutans that should be leaving this area, it is the palm oil companies who are breaking the law."

There are an estimated 6,600 Sumatran orangutans remaining in the wild.

'The X Factor' Judge's Houses: Is Vino Alan Too Tough For The Show? (VIDEO)

"The X Factor" wrapped the Judge's Houses round by showing the performances from the Teens category and the Over-25s. L.A. Reid made it very clear that he wasn't happy to have the Over-25s, and went so far as to tell them that he wasn't all that excited about them. So the pressure was on for this group more than ever. Especially because many of them feel this is their last opportunity at superstardom.

Vino Alan, at 40-years old, is the oldest contestant in the competition. He blew the judges away with his vocal performance, covering P!nk's "Sober," but the judges were slightly worried about his appearance. Vino is one tough looking dude, but his gruff exterior hides a sensitive and soaring voice.

That emotion he brings to his performance comes in part from his troubled childhood. He opened up about coming from an abusive home. "When I was a kid, my mom married an abusive man," he said. "You know, I was physically tortured and mentally tortured. But the biggest torture of all was having her beat nightly."

Critics were blown away by Vino's voice, with PopCrush saying he "totally owned" the song. But TV Fanatic was worried voters might be turned off by his tough exterior.

After two nights of great performances, 24 must become 16. Find out which contestants move on to the live shows on "The X Factor," Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

Halloween Family Fun

I think for most people coming to this blog, you?ll know exactly what Samhain is already. For those who curious, you can read about the origins of Samhain on Wikipedia.

?

One of the best things, for me, about Samhain is celebrating the season with my children. We spend much of the month of October preparing for Samhain and enjoying the start of the real fall weather.

Here is a list of a few activities that you can do yourself, or share with your kids!

It?s a great time to dig out all your witchy black clothing and all those ?Neighborhood Witch? shirts. No one will even blink at them this time of year, even if you are still ?in the broom closet?.

Break out the baking or candy making supplies and create some fun Halloween goodies!

Have your whole family gather to write new year?s resolutions on scraps of paper and burn them in your cauldron.

Decorate your yard in a spooky or fun way.

Gather your empty boxes and make a Haunted Halloween House!

For trick-or-treating, or other events, wear costumes that reflect what you hope to accomplish or what you wish for in the coming year.

Go pumpkin picking and carve jack-o-lanterns. ?Throw a handful of protection herbs (garlic, salt, rosemary) into the jack-o-lantern to increase it?s protective nature.

Find a corn or sunflower maze and find your way out!

Use your craft scraps and old socks to make some Halloween Sock Buddies

Bury an apple by your front door as food for the dead ? and don?t forget to bury?one by the back door as well! This keeps the spirits passing through so they won?t linger in your home.

Practice divination. ?Throw your runes, use a magic mirror, or simply fill your cauldron with water and see what you can see.

Set out a mute supper to honor the dead. This doesn?t have to be an elaborate event. Simply set out apples, pomegranates, salt and apple cider for your ?guests?.

Gather supplies and make a few candles for the year. These can be as simple as melting old candle stubs and repouring them. Add scents, herbs, stones or shells accordingly. There are candle making kits in most craft stores with simple instructions.

Make a new wand or help your child find wood to make his/hers. Try to find fallen branches of oak, holly, ash, rowan, willow or whatever wood ?speaks? to you.

Make a witch?s ladder to hang in your home for protection, or to help manifest your wishes for the coming year.

Cast protection spells on your home and/or property.

Review the mistakes of the past year. Write them down on scraps of paper. Vow to not repeat the. Burn the papers in your cauldron and cast off your feelings over these mistakes.
Cleanse all of your divination tools and rededicate them to the God and/or Goddess. To cleanse, pass through sage smoke, wipe them with a mugwort tea, or whatever your favorite method is.

Do a simple divination reading for every month of the coming year. ?Write them in a notebook so that you can reflect on them through the year and see how many of your predictions happened!

Harvest 9 hazel nuts (or alternately purchase them if you can?t find them!) and use them to make a wreath of protection for your home.

Decorate your door with a bundle of 3 stalks of Indian corn, representing the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone.

Create dried apple ?shrunken heads?

Gather pictures from past Halloween/Samhain events through the years and create a special scrapbook just for the season. ?Add recipes, photos, rituals, decoration and craft ideas.

Plan a creepy, fun dinner!

Learn the history of Halloween

?

However you choose to celebrate the season, mix the fun in with stories about the origins of Samhain and why we continue it to this day.

Tigers' fortunes hinge on Verlander? |? Sit Valverde

Justin Verlander?s Game 1 start against the A?s was easily the best of his postseason career. In allowing one run ?over seven innings, he picked up his fourth win in nine starts and lowered his October ERA from 5.57 to 4.96.

Now one wonders if he might need to be even better in Thursday?s decisive Game 5.

The Tigers simply aren?t doing much scoring. They?ve totaled 11 runs while splitting the first four games against the A?s. Three of those came on Oakland errors. In all, they?ve had eight extra-base hits, which is the same number the Giants had against the Reds on Wednesday alone.

Add to that the fact that the eighth and ninth inning guys have been a mess. Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde have combined to allow five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings in the series. They also amassed a 5.59 ERA in 27 1/3 innings during September.

Ideally, Verlander will just go the full nine in outdueling rookie Jarrod Parker. He?s never done it in the postseason, but he had six complete games during the regular season this year.

Anything less and the Tigers are in big trouble. It seems nearly unfathomable that the A?s will rough up Verlander, but as we?ve seen the last two days, they don?t need to do much scoring to win.
